For a country to keep pace with its rivals with respect to attracting the biggest and best companies to invest in and build infrastructure within it, that country must be able to provide the very best educated and trained workforce. For developing countries such as Thailand this is doubly true. Thailand, in South East Asia, is in stiff competition with its neighbour Malaysia to the south and Vietnam to its East for lucrative deals with foreign companies from all over the world. In addition to this, these emerging markets have their own small, medium and large enterprises looking to compete both domestically and internationally, and thus they themselves are in need of those highly skilled employees to provide them with the workforce required to grow and compete in their respective rapidly growing industries.

Therefore, a key aspect to the development of any country is its education system and its schools. One need only look at where the best and most respected universities in the world such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale are located as well as the emergence of universities in the most recent additions to the globe’s economic powerhouses, China and India, to appreciate that the quality of a country’s educational establishments and its position on the corporate world stage are inextricably linked.

While Thailand’s and more specifically Bangkok’s universities are yet to command the same level of respect as their more prestigious peers abroad, the international schools in the kingdom’s capital are becoming renowned for offering excellent primary and secondary education through the medium of English. Indeed, such is the level and relative affordability of the best international institutions there has been an influx of students from a wide variety of countries such as traditional economic Asian powerhouses Japan and Korea. The fact that such good quality schooling is available in addition to the excellent quality of life on offer to ex-patriots also makes it a far easier decision for executives with multinationals with offices in Bangkok or those looking to branch out with their businesses into a fast-growing domestic Thai market to bring their families with them when they make the move.

So where can these people, as well as the international school teachers that working at these fine educational establishments, find suitable and convenient accommodation? For expatriates who have upped sticks from the UK, the US, Canada or anywhere else in the world, to live in Thailand, going home to their respective countries can generally be a both emotional and interesting experience. Emotional, of course, as seeing family and close friends after such a long time can possibly be a combination of happy, sad, difficult, and exciting, but, almost always, moving. Indeed, it often seems that the highest price we pay for what many of us deem a far higher quality of life in terms of weather, cost of living, entertainment options, and access to inexpensive healthcare, is the fact that we have to sacrifice regular contact with loved ones. However, once one has lived in Thailand for an extended period of time, one of the things that is interesting, about travelling back to your home town or city and seeing those people is the misconceptions they sometimes have about your new home.

Once you have sufficiently acclimatized to life in Thailand and can finally call the place home, the misconceptions the less travelled among those that you meet can, in actual fact, be rather startling. For many, their image of Bangkok is more akin to the 60s streets of Vietnam War era Hanoi than the affluent, ultra-modern city that the Thai capital is today. These people also imagine life in the metropolis as being a constant battle with poor transportation infrastructure and an impenetrable set of languages, customs, and culinary fare primarily consisting of feet, hooves and other even less enticing animal parts.

We, on the other hand, know this isn’t true. There are, of course, pockets of the city that may still hold true to this stereotyped and outdated view, but, these days, for an expatriate that wants to live in Thailand without having to forfeit a modern and metropolitan life, the possibilities are endless, and two of the very best areas to choose from in this respect are Thonglor and Phrom Phong.

The fashionable district of Thonglor boasts some of the best bars, restaurants and clubs in the city. Those looking to take advantage of the area have some excellent options with regards to apartments.

One of the most popular is the excellent The Clover condominium. A brand new low-rise condo located in the heart of Thonglor, only a short walk to J-Avenue shopping complex and the international Villa supermarket, The Clover offers  studios (with partitions) starting from16,000 Baht, 45sqm one  bedroom units from 25,000, and two bedrooms  from 35,000 Baht for 75sqm.

First is the The El Patio apartment complex. El Patio offers great value for money and there is a tuk tuk service to Phrom Phong BTS. Only two years old, it is built in a Spanish style and has a large pool. Its 50sqm one bedroom apartments  start at 15,000 Baht, 80sqm two bedrooms from 20,000, and three bedroom apartments 30,000.
